Students' perspective on the case method
Promoting changes in learning is strongly related to a careful look at students. Therefore, we often ask ourselves:
How do students perceive the experience with the case method? What feelings do they bring? What skills do they develop? Are these skills seen as valuable by them?
In order to bring greater clarity to these questions, in 2021, Thiago Zottmann did his final work under the guidance of Professor Helena Costa.
THE CONTRIBUTION OF THE TEACHING METHOD WITH CASES TO THE TRAINING OF ADMINISTRATORS: the perspective of the Business Administration student at the University of Brasília
In 2021, Zotmann conducted an online survey with 184 colleagues who are students in the Department of Administration at UnB. His research brings inputs that help to refine the performance of the ADM Casoteca itself, while allowing a better understanding of the impacts of the method for the training of administrators.
We highlight here some of its main findings about the students' perspective on their experiences with teaching cases in the classroom:
Positive outlook
The students' view is predominantly positive about experience with cases (86% of students satisfied)
Positive feelings
The majority of students (90%) declare that Positive feelings in relation to the use of cases in the classroom. The feeling of "excited" stands out, followed by "satisfied" and "autonomous".
Skills developed
The three competencies most developed by the method, according to the interviewees were: "Problem Solving", "Decision Making" and "Analytical Thinking and Innovation".
Extra-class application
For 94% of the interviewees, the skills acquired with the use of the case method have been important in their extra-class activities, such as internships, working in the junior company, among others.
Improvements to be sought
The research reveals evidence of the need to improve the development of skills related to communication and to make the use of the method more homogeneous among all the axes of the course.
