Your library of cases and tutorials

This tutorial is dedicated to a book that can contribute to what we seek: a more autonomous, creative and innovative learning through the use of teaching cases.

"Learning in Action: Using Cases for Innovation in Teaching and Learning" is the book that is being launched today by professors Anielson Barbosa da Silva (UFPB) and Rodrigo Bandeira-de-Mello (FGV EAESP).

The authors present us with a work - free and digital - about the learning process based on cases. For the authors:

"The method presented consists of the use of cases for teaching as a strategy that enhances professional training, since it articulates theory and practice, and reflection in action. We argue that the experience of personal experiences should integrate the context of academic training — whether at the undergraduate or graduate level — and contribute to an innovative student-oriented teaching and learning strategy."

The book, which has an excellent preface by Professor Anete Alberton (UNIVALI), covers topics of deep interest for those who want to reflect and improve pedagogy and the development of skills with the use of cases in the classroom. If you are here at Casoteca ADM, it is certainly one of the interests we share. After all, the Casoteca ADM project was designed not only to have cases themselves, but to offer a space to support this pedagogical practice, in the form of tutorials, both for students and teachers.

Professor Anete presents us with very interesting elements and questions. The professor contextualizes a coordinated effort that has been made to improve the application of the method in the training of administrators in Brazil. An issue that particularly catches my attention is the reflection on teaching grades (an issue that is always in our reflections here at Casoteca ADM - and that we choose not to have them). Another aspect is to call us to reflect on the future of these instruments, thinking about multimedia cases (something that is also in our heads and that we work to achieve).

In the work, the authors discuss aspects about planning for the use of cases, preparation for debate, the production of cases, the roles of teachers, among others.

Experience It is a key word in the approach that the authors bring:

"One of the central aspects of cases for teaching is experience. As one of the dimensions of the learning system in action, valuing the experiences of students and teachers/facilitators is decisive in personal and collective growth. Teaching cases aim to accelerate students' acquisition of new experiences, but it is also important to encourage them to share their professional and social experiences during case analysis sessions. In addition, the use of cases for teaching contributes to the development of the students' reflective practice. To this end, it is necessary to create a learning environment that favors individual and collective reflection in the various phases of the analysis process in the context of the classroom (Silva and Bandeira-de-Mello, 2021, p. 64)."

I hope that we can, over time, develop each of the topics further, as well as enrich our tutorials, even those that have already been published, with their reflection. And, hopefully, to collaborate with these authors, who contribute a high-quality reflection for the improvement of the teaching-learning process in ADM.
